Definitely a stain and sand application. I purposely had the logos and wording designed to come up flat with the surface (no carving), this gave me an easy flat surface to sand with my profile sander. The picture was a pre-polyurethane one, it really popped once the semi-gloss finish went on. Doing the stain and sand plan on this went so quick, it was on soft maple so I wasn't as happy with the "gunstock" stain that I used - kind of blotchy in places even though I used a stain pre-conditioner. The Vols and Giants pieces both used the same stain, you can see the results are quite different between maple (Vols) and oak (giants). If I had it to do over, i'd of sanded the giants one also. Here's the finished Vols one, and another one I used the stain/sand method on to make the lettering easier to read. In the 2nd amendment one, it was a sample piece I cut just to see how it would come out, it's only 6" tall, so the lettering is smaller than what I'd have on a more finished piece for sale which would be twice the size. This had the same stain as the others, but was on oak, so you can see how that comes forth also. Forgive the content, this is Indiana and we like our guns. Attachments:

I started some carvings (lithopanes) from photographs. Anyone care to give an idea of what prices they are selling their work for? You can post or PM me.

I get between $55 - $65 on the recent wood ones that I showed here....I'd think you'd get the same for unlighted lithopanes. I'd love to see one of your finished projects, I bought some acrylic a while back but have never carved it. I know some people think $35 is too expensive for some of this, but especially for the customized pictures you're doing top dollar is warranted.

Here is an example of a neat little feature I have been using in GIMP, it is a tool called retinex which is in the colors menu. You will have to temporarily convert your image to a RGB instead of grayscale for this to work, then convert back to grayscale when finished and also make your image have an alpha channel(transparent layer). It puts a raised and somewhat beveled area around your main design, it actually affects the entire design, so what you need to do is first add an alpha channel (transparent layer in the layers tab) then use a selection tool ( I use free select) to select the main design, then under the select menu choose invert which changes the selection to the outer portion, click edit tab and choose clear. This leaves you the main design, save this as whatever you wish so you can add it back in later. Next using the entire original image choose the retinex tool under the colors tab, it will bring up an adjustment box and you will have to play around with the sliders to get the effect you want to have. After you have the desired amount of effect, you can then choose to add your cut out saved main design back into the project by clicking "control / alt / O " (you should find your saved file under recently used) This will place your original main design image over the one that was affected by the retinex and it will be un affected. While the project is still a stack of layers you can go to the windows tab and choose dockable dialogs tab / layers and highlight the retinex layer and choose to adjust the brightness lighter or darker (colors tab) as you wish. Finish up by clicking "control M " this will merge the layers into one image, go to layers tab and choose remove alpha channel, convert your image back to grayscale and export the image to where you save your files. This effect looks nice on a carve and it saves a lot of the clear out carving your bit has to do when using just a dark background.

Here is another example of the retinex tool to create a raised area around the cross:

I would be very hesitant to purchase anything from Aliexpress which is a branch of Alibaba, both known to have malware and virus issues in electronic delivery. Plus you would be sending your credit card info to mainland China.

I don't give my credit card info over the internet. You won't find it on my computer. I use prepaid card so if anything happens my loss is limited.

Here is a recent design I put together:I plan on cutting out the piece with an angle of about 30 degrees down the edges.

Great to see activity here again, I've been off for over a month since I emptied my office and disconnected my computer to have new carpeting installed, it was the same stuff I've had for almost 30 years since we bought the house. I tossed my old desk (1981 metal) and built the desk below. Just started putting the office together again after finishing assembly of the desk today.

Rick, that is one nice looking desk you built. We only have one room to fix floors in, our sun room, Cheap laminate was put down a long time ago and it has past it's life span and I think we are going to go with slate. We have totally eliminated carpet in the house over time as it just holds too much dirt. I did my spring craft show here in Madison over Memorial Day weekend and boy was it a disaster in terms of sales. It was in the 90's everyday and plus there were a lot of High School graduations going on. Those 2 things contributed to a very low amount of traffic. The one highlight of the weekend was I got to meet Mr Fat Poppy and his Wife as they were in the neighborhood, so they stopped in for a visit at the craft show.

We did laminate through out most of the downstairs, the living room stayed carpet since our 1 year old granddaughter still falls alot....been walking since 10 months old and her first birthday is next week. My office had indoor/outdoor carpeting in it that was installed by the previous owners, and we never bothered replacing it before. While carpet does hold dirt, I'm finding that laminate shows dirt faster, wife isn't too happy about that although we love the look. Our porch is getting new windows at the end of the summer (8 weeks from the order being placed) and then this fall we want new counter tops in the kitchen and backsplash. My wife understands spending money.
Fort Wayne has a craft show as part of the Three River Festival every July, a lot of high end goods are sold and the traffic is always good if it's not raining. My type of stuff wouldn't fit into the show, I'm doing more furniture etc than plaques. I haven't visited that show in a few years, great quality stuff but I'm a little too cheap for what they have - stained glass, baubles, etc.

Just a heads up, Windows 10 did an automatic update on my PC overnight and I lost a whole bunch of stuff as a result. Maybe in the area of about 50% of my artwork folders and I have not even delved into what is gone from my photos. I am in the process of restoring files from Norton backup and boy is it a pain. I did a Google search and it seems this has affected several with this update and previous ones. So one might want to check your files if the update was done recently. I never would have dreamed that the update would wipe personal files.........
