I am cutting 2 mm deep. I am just practicing on the plexiglass as it seems to slightly melt on the cuts You can also use acrylic for litho's , just make sure it is cast acrylic not extruded. Plexiglass, yes it will tend to melt.

So my corian is due this week. It is 1/4" thick and I plan to cut a photo picture into it. Recommended depth? Invert in I-picture? Do I also use corel to flip it 180 degrees?
thanks John

I believe I cut the ones that I have done at 2.5 mm and you do need to invert in I-Picture. I do not have Corel, but I would think that the program would have image position tools.

The i-picture invert switches the way it cuts dark and light … I believe. With a lithopane, I'm guessing you have the carved side facing the back light and the smooth side is facing out. I'm thinking I need a reverse image so that the carved photo looks the same as the original photo … for instance, the number on a uniform will show correctly. Thoughts?

Little confused, you mentioned corian in one post and lithopane in the next. Corian cuts much like wood from my experience, I even smooth out the edges of corian with my table saw by pushing it through very slowly. I havent done lithopanes yet, but I believe that if you are backlighting it you do need to reverse (not invert) it to get the correct orientation of the picture. You invert it to have it cut the image deeper into the acrylic.
With corian, I've cut at .23" with no problem, I do recommend low speed and possibly a smaller scan step to get the best results. It will take longer to cut, but the results tend to be fantastic in corian.
Just wondering if anyone has done sidelighting of lithopanes with the led light strips that are cheap and available now a days?

I was actually thinking of doing a video tutorial that would be GIMP based. I have been looking around the web for a program (free) that can do a screen video and audio capture, any suggestions for programs appreciated as there are many out thereh here is one called screen recorder

Mr Oliver : Thanks for the info, but I did indeed find a screen video program to use to make some videos. I have done a couple so far and posted them on here. I will be adding some additional in the near future. Just looking to help out other users in making grayscale/ heightmap imagery to use in I-Picture as once you learn it, one can make an image suitable for carving out of most imagery. Takes a little time and practice, but in the end it is more versatile to make one's own and save the expense of buying already made artwork which could get rather expensive. I have had my machine since August of 2012 and have been a member of the forum here since it's beginning and hopefully have been somewhat helpful to other users on here.

A short video to show how to use some GIMP tools to clean up and image
And another to show how to use some centering guides:

Nothing really earth shattering on those previous 2 , but just some tips on various tools one can use.

I have had this image on my computer for over a year and had done nothing to convert it because I knew it would be an extensive amount of work : So jump to the present and after having a severe knee problem and taking Roids and other meds for it for 2 wks my system is all screwed up ( my body no longer even acknowledges I have a knee) , been up and down at all different times of the day. Up yesterday morning at way 'O dark thirty and I began what involved a complete dissection of every aspect of the image and re-assemble and now have something according to the I-Picture preview that should be pretty good after about 3 hrs of work.....Finally. When I get it carved out will post a pic. Here it is :

What depth are you planning on carving this (sorry about the knee by the way, that's one problem I've avoided so far). I'm did you have to lighten up the helmet to get it to carve above the eagle, looks like in the picture it should actually be darker than the feathers and therefore would carve inward. Anxious to see your results, this would look great in maple or a dark oak.

I've said that getting older is better than the alternative, but the part about having to endure pain and misery should not have to be part of it. The steroids were the real trouble maker, the ones I got were like 10 stronger than the norm.....sort of like being hooked up to 220 ac. Just ending the regime today so that should continue to improve from here out.
I will likely set depth around 5mm for the piece. I did have to adjust most aspects of the pic hence the disassembly part, literally taking objects and saving as layers, working on them individually and the put them all back together.

Wish I had your patience, just don't want the knees.
