Nick looking sign Rick. Are you letting the carver cut the final shape out or you doing that?

Actually I cut out the final shape on my jig saw, the design has a slight cut in it around the edge that worked as a perfect guide for the cut. Obviously the product isn't "finished", I did some light sanding on it but the Boy Scouts wanted to give this to the scouts to do the finish work as a project. I didn't think a cut through would work since I used 1" thick board to give them some substance to attach their spike to, allowing them to push it into the ground at the campsite. Here's the final order, on normal cutting the nameplates took an hour and 10 minutes each (1/32 bit), and the logo's took 9.5 hours (1/50 bit). I did these at a big discount because it is a kids organization ($5 per nameplate, $11 per logo), and they supplied the wood.

For anyone who wants to help out the boy scouts, I made this for a local troop so that they can put out signs outside the troop tents on campouts. I included the grayscale for the general emblem, my finished product has SPL on it "Senior Patrol Leader". They are considering buying 15 of these for use in their troop, each with a different initial on it. The B & W is what I downloaded to start with. LOOKS AWESOME I LIKE IT

Shaft, what type of wood did you use in the bodywork pro carving? It really projects well.

Rick it is hard maple. I had some really nice pieces come out of that board because of the contrasting dark grain. Thank you

Here is a short video showing the conversion of an image for carving:
I am going to add another video later on to show how to use this rose to make a composite image for carving

This pertains to using GIMP
On the subject of transparent layers, when you create a composite project using different images if you first add a transparency (alpha channel) to your project and to the components you want to use you can insert them and have them blend together. This is true even if you have filled the background with the color of your choice (usually black for depth) . You also will want to do all blur effects to each component before you start adding them in, otherwise when you remove the transparency / alpha channel you will have white lines around the edges of the components.
To create a composite image create the size you want, do the work described above. Then you can add the images to it by clicking : control / alt / O (not zero) and finding the file you want to add. They will usually add to the center of your project and you will need to use the "move" tool to position them where you want. When everything is in place where you want you can merge them together into one image by clicking: control / M.
When done with a project make sure you remove the transparency and double check that you image is grayscale before you save it.

What people are buying: On the Vols sign. Are you just staining and then sanding off or taping off then staining to get the lighter color letters.
