Excellent job Bob, I do most of the same things with publisher and Photoshop elements.......too lazy to learn GIMP now. For anyone just starting to work with grayscale, GIMP is a free program and obviously Bob shows that it does just about everything you need to do. These tutorials would be a godsend to anyone starting out with a CNC system.

This video briefly shows how you can use the G'mic plug in for GIMP to create some nice frames to go around your images:
I should add that in all the videos, I needed to mention that you need to check and make sure the transparent layer (alpha channel) has been removed and that the image is listed as a grayscale image before saving. Failure to do so will result in an error when converting in I-Picture and if not there, in the carve itself. For instance if the image is saved as an RGB instead of grayscale you may have errors in your carved piece. Saving the project with a transparent layer still in place will result in an error when loading into I-Picture. The error I received was "incorrect chunk length" which is caused by too much information in the file caused by the transparency.
UPDATE: When using the GMIC filter to create a frame it is easier to put the frame around your existing composition since the GMIC filter automatically sets the frame size based on the dimensions of your design which is far easier than trying to get a stand alone frame to fit your image afterwards.

Thanks much, I need to upgrade my pc, doing the videos was really taxing it's resources. One of those fine points of windows 8, you just can't seem to turn off enough background processes that are consuming resources.

Here is a Celtic Tree of Life pattern I just made, anyone is free to use it: I might add that I included a thin black line around the outside of the circle so that if one wanted to cut this out as a round piece instead of a square, it would act as a guide for cutting on a scroll saw or bandsaw.

Bob, I just started using my Intellicarve 1013. I practiced with some sheets of Plexiglas for lithopanes and ordered some 1/4" corian that I am going to make some lithopanes from. I am going to try the Celtic Tree this weekend. If anyone has some grayscale items to share, I would appreciate any. I've seen a last supper one on this forum or a cnc forum that I would like to try if anyone has to share. Right now I working on grayscaling some soccer pictures and making lithopanes for my daughters' team mates that will graduating from college this school year.

My plexiglass is .125 inches thick. It is in sheet form that i bought off of craigslist … a very good price I might add.

I am cutting 2 mm deep. I am just practicing on the plexiglass as it seems to slightly melt on the cuts
