Here is a special order sign I made for a friend of mine, carved into 1" thick cedar. I used ms paint to create this one. I/32" bit. 6mm deep Attachments:

That looks cool. Did you use true type fonts? true type fonts are actually vectors and can be resized to any shape or form a lot easier than normal raster fonts.

Actually I just used the fonts available in the MS paint for the lettering on the sign, they seem to carve OK, you just cannot get too small or thin bodied for raised letters.

Here is an image I have been working on using GIMP. I did one of the wings and extracted the image and ran thru I-Picture, did a test carve of the wing. Attachments:

Since I haven't figured out how to post multiple pics on here, this is the wing I had referred to, the finished GIMP image that I used and the result of carving in I-Picture Attachments:

Are you using a jpeg file for the imagine? The reason I ask is a .jpg file leaves a very small white line around the object and it will show up in the cut. I would also put some blur into it so it smooths the edges.

Greg, The image I used , I converted to a PNG file before any work was done on it in GIMP. Also I did get some contour on the edges, but for the test run I set it to carve 6 mm deep, which was way too deep. The entire image is in the machine carving into a piece of Red Maple right now with a setting of 4.5 mm deep and looks really good so far.

Yep that one looks good too, it would be awesome if you could turn a board over and cut that on the back side. What Z did you cut it at?

Greg, I considered cutting on the backside but did not think it would display good that way, I have about 40 pcs in an artisan shop in Madison Indiana and these 2 will go side by side on the display. Set the z depth to 4.5 mm.
