I was surfing thru General Machinery Forum and see that they had negotiated a deal a company named Rasterclip 3D, a division of Vectorclip, which allows owners of the General I- Carvers a free trial membership of 10 downloads for 30 days and then discounted membership. I was wondering if Oliver Machinery could get the same deal from Rasterclip as the do have quite a variety of images.

Bob it sounds like you are at the point I was at about 4 months ago, you want more than what came with the machine and there is almost nothing you can find online that looks like them. Do a search for "depth map" also go to this site cnc4free.org
I also checked out the site raster clip and they have some nice stuff I just can't bring myself to pay them $235 a year to be allowed to download 10 pics a month!
So I set out to make my own thats where the cnc4free site comes in there is help file that you can download that will teach you how to make your own and free up your work with the machine.
It took me a while to get the hang of it because I had no one to ask for help thats why I'm happy this forum was created. Greg

Greg, the download limit for Rasterclip is 10 per day for a year, of course they don't have 3650 files yet, but for having just launched in December they are already up to 425. Not all are things I would use but some are rather nice. I think we exchanged e-mails before from the "other forum". I have tried some different things to create images to carve, but with limited success, if I could ever master the use of layers I might get it right, as that seems to be the only way to create depth and maintain detail.

Ok Bob I didn't realize this was the same person, i found whie using Gimp that you can do more with a picture when you copy and paste it into a new file instead of trying to alter the original for some reason.

I admit its hard to get the gradients to do right I think it took me about 3 weeks of playing around with it before I got it down.
I use the selection editor to see what I have selected then anything inside the selection can have a gradient added to it.

I was reading another forum and someone had excellent results using layering.

Yep, been working on images and very slooowly starting to get some good results, and actually did one that carved out great, but now cannot remember all the steps and the order that I used to get there. That will come with more doing. It would be nice if there was a way here for people to share images that they have come up with.

I just kept going back to that help file from the cnc4free.org site and doing it one step at a time then it dawned on me what I was doing and it got easy.

For those using GIMP for images, here is a PDF file of keyboard shortcuts to make them a little easier. And Greg, you are right after playing around with images for what seems like forever, it's like a light bulb came on and now I am having great results making images suitable for carving. Attachments:

Bob thanks for that link, basically anything you can make an outline around you can put a gradient into thats why cartoons and the like are easier to work with than pictures. Also after playing aroundwith photoshop I am finding it easier to work with gradients than in Gimp. In Gimp you can watch the little box called the "selection editor" and it show what is selected as black and white, once you select the part you want a gradient in then press the little button at the bottom of the box that say "invert" so your selction inverts then do the gradient and it will stay inside of your object.
I have found that you want to stay away from jpeg's I just convert them to bmp or png because a jpeg puts a little white line around your work that will show up in your cut and mess it up.

I just received the 500 image disc in the mail from Oliver Machinery, lot's of useful images on there adds quite a bit to the variety we'll have available.

I called and requested it, gave them my name & address as per a post on here that said they would have them available first week of march, took them til now but they finally got them in. It has some duplicates of what came with the machine originally but some other neat stuff also.

The DVD is coming with new machines now. It was included with the machine I just bought last week. I'm attaching the summary PDF that comes on the DVD for anyone who is interested in seeing what comes on it. Index file part 1 of 4 Attachments:
