I'm still doing a few signs for the wife to give out. Haven't done the "microscope" yet for my son, I'm wanting to use 12" black walnut and what I have, the grain is the wrong way. Have tried several suppliers close to me, with no luck, hope to try a new mill this Saturday about three hours away. Really enjoy hearing from you all. FatPoppy

I haven't used the carver much this winter - just a sign or two as gifts. Router is still running well as long as it is kept clean. Bosch router spindle is running well (2nd one is lasting better than the 1st). Cooling fan is running a little slow and might need to be replaced at some point. Home-made plastic covered wood-frame enclosure looks crude (it is) but is effective at improving the shop environment.
Next item might be a rooster whirly-gig. Over the winter I got my two hydrofoil "wings" (5" chord by 40") glassed, filled, and ready for a gel-coat. Then I will use for experiments for my duckboat.
Was looking at lasers at one point but since I haven't been using the Oliver much I can't really justify another similar toy. Andrew.

FatPoppy FatPoppy, I don't know if you have experienced it yet with black walnut, but unless you start with a brand new bit and use a lower scan step you will get fuzzies that will be very difficult to sand out. I think it has to do with the black walnut being more of an "open" grained wood. For that reason I don't use walnut very much at all. The fuzzies I got were worse than if I was using a soft wood like pine, they looked like strings sticking up out of the wood.
I too have not been using the machine that much this winter other than some special orders, but that's a changing now as I get ready for a Memorial weekend 3 day craft show, I was even interviewed for a newspaper article, see the link to it below.link

I think from now on we'll need to refer to you as Mr. Bob. HA! The wife and I have been wanting to go to the Ark, which isn't real far from your show. If it happen to work out for those dates, we may just stop by your booth and say "Hello". I had carved a sailing ship on a 9.5"X10.5" piece of black walnut and think that it was the first carve on the bit. It turned out very good with lots of detail, haven't painted it yet. The second carve on that bit I did a was a 7"X20" black walnut sign and it had the fuzzies. I was flat and I was able to sand them off and the letters were sharp, haven't painted it either. I tried to send pictures of these but somewhere between my high tech phone, my low tech mind and the desktop computer.....it didn't work out!
One more thing. Have any of you had any luck carving on foam sign board? Have a good day, FatPoppy

FatPoppy, well if you do make it up this way it would be great to meet you, that show is held May 25, 26 and 27 Fri, Sat, Sun. It is basically around the square block that surrounds the courthouse here in Madison. I am always located on the back side on 2nd Street (no vehicle traffic) Main street at the front side has live traffic at all the booths backsides (scary)
No, I have not tried to do any foam board carving. I have researched it some but have not delved into it.

While I realize the 1013 is old hat to those of us that have used it for years, but it's still fun to see others reactions to watching it work. Making a nameplate out of corian to mount on a new swim raft, simple name, address, phone number. While they were supposed to be putting in my new countertops and plumping, the workers kept stepping out to the garage to watch the 1013 work. I could of sold three machines this morning if I'd had a supply....lol.
