Well I am getting to know about file backup as the hard drive on my computer just bought the farm, and my only hope is that the norton backup has all of the image files I had created. I will have to wait and find out when I get a new computer whether they are all in the backup files. And to think just the other day I was pondering burning those files to a disc just in case something would happen. I would say that if I can't get em back I just lost hundreds of hours work. So everyone might want to consider backing up your image files because...............

If it's just corrupt you can save most of the stuff I used a nasty purchase program to take everything off mine the last time it happened. If it's mechanical you can pay to have it copied but man thats gonna cost. I think I used file scavenger and took snapshot of the drive then burned it as an ISO.

Did you try installing a new hard drive and loading your operating system. then reconnect your bad hard drive? Sometimes it's just one bad sector that prevents the system from operating and you can access it through the other hard drive.

Actually the hard drive failure was mechanical, and undiscoverable.

Thanks Rick, but when I made the original post I thought I had lost everything, but with the Norton AV backup I was able to retrieve all my files from online back up, it took a lot of downloading but got it done. I now keep things backed up on a spare PC in the workshop and norton.
