Has anyone came across a good source of cast acrylic for purchase , so far what I have seen available is way to costly to make anything out of.

I was just wondering if anyone is doing much with lithopanes, most of the posts on the bulletin board are about wood carvings. I'm thinking of a few projects that might be fun to do, combining wood and some lithopanes with a light behind them highlighting the carving. Any suggestions on carving lithopanes such as best bit to use, type of preferred materials, etc would be appreciated.

I am going to try some in the near future and I'm tending towards using semi transparent acrylic. In research I have found that you need to make sure you use cast acrylic not extruded, if it doesn't specify that it is cast in the description then it's likely extruded. As far as bits and depth that will be an experiment.

Bob, quick question as to why cast vs extruded? Does the extruded crack easier or is it tougher to cut patterns in? I'm guessing the cast must also be more expensive if the majority is extruded.

I believe the cast is a little harder making it carve better and that the extruded tends to melt/curl, not much different than what happens when you cut it with a saw. Corian is a good material from what I've read, it is actually a form of cast acrylic anyway. Oh yea, nice Colts sign there....maybe next year for them.

Just received some white Corian 5 x 7 sheets I ordered off ebay @ 4.22/sheet. I will be giving that a try here in the next week or so once I clear the way on some other stuff I'm working on. Looks like it would also make a nice insert for a lid on a small box.

Here is my first result trying a lithopane, original pic converted to grayscale and the actual carved piece. Carved in glacier white corian 1/4" thick. Carved at 2mm depth 1/50th" bit

So other than converting that to grayscale, you did nothing more to enhance the picture? It really came out great, how does it look with a light behind it, does the picture show through?

Yes I simply converted the image to grayscale, no other tweaking of the image. The pic of the lithopane was just sunlight backlit and am trying to find a good light source that is both bright and diffuse. It really pops with a bright light behind it but it needs to be an evenly distributed light or else it is brighter in areas and darker in others.

Have you figured out the lighting yet? I know that in working through tons of slides left from my inlaws estate we use a small slide viewer, inside that is a single light that has a diffuser sheet in front of it, similar to what florescent lights have used to even out their light. Maybe some version of that would work. Also, I wonder if using transparent colored acrylic sheets might make the results more visible. That stuff sure isn't cheap.
