YES A MUSTANG FAN... i have probably 15 of them just waiting for a make over!! i was over at my sons house to fix the computer over the weekend, anyways i have a few pictures that are blk/white slightly out of focus that have just a bit blur to it! i'm going to try it ? i see a couple web sites out there that will take a picture and make it greyscale ? am i better to try thin letter text or bold ? i went to gimp and it looks confusing atleast to me.. is there any other cd software in greyscale besides the one that came with the machine ? been spending alot of time with my very sick dad, very sad to see him so sick and on hospis

Sorry to hear about your Dad, hope he gets better.
There is a site called Vectorclip 3D, but you have to purchase a subscription. If you get files from them you have to make sure they are in BMP format.
Their file formats are : VNA , RLF , STL , PTN , and BMP
The only ones that will work with the 1013 machine are the BMP format

Sorry about your dad, my dad went through hospice also but was able to stay home up till the end. The hospice people visited daily and were incredible, but I have to admit I'd find that job much too depressing.

thanks for the kind words.... so far he is ok and he is on the home hospice, he is 88 and doesn't look it! but i know he's feeling somewhat ok because he says would you get that damn machine working... so i've been messing around with gimp and also taking the color images and doing some blk/white with soft edges etc... all the text is in blk with a blur and white background! i also have sitting in the garage is a 4x10 ft cnc space saver that i would like to mess with in a year or so and that should be fun! get some image software for it... learning little by little. should i have the text white and the b-ground blk or grey ? you would think there would be a greyscale library of 1000's of images like whats on the cd that came with the machine but no luck finding it! Bob said to check out gimp so i'm playing with it, so far i can't figure out how to save a edited image so i've been taking a picture of the screen!! atleast i'm having fun and have new things to try to explain to dad.... if i had the wood turned the right way those wings link from bob would have turned out really cool... thanks again

First thing I would do for saving edited images would be to go to your pictures folder and create a new folder just for carving images, you can name it what you want. In GIMP under the file menu choose this: Then choose the folder in pictures and save as what ever name you choose:

jgstang.....concerning your question with letters, it depends on what you're attempting to have in your design. White letters with black/gray background will leave the letters rising up from the background; white background with black letters will leave the background uncarved with just the letters being carved down into the piece. Blurring the edges will soften the cut with either style of design, and if you use a font with really tight edges it can help avoid wood splitting in certain areas where the bit goes up and down, for example the circle on a P.

i'm back and feeling like a computer dummy again!!!
ok i'm doing something wrong and don't know what... first i'm useing a greyscale heart picture that the machine came with!
so i open i picture and open image and load the greyscale image.
size boxs left to right useing in inches 5" 5" 1.5"
it changes to 5.613 5.0 0.118
scan step 0.007874
tool type r 1/32
feed depth .15 for approx 3/16"
i use center
click convert and the loading bar go's across
g code saved and click ok
somewhere in there i inserted the file name as heart
after all looks done i pull out the usb out and i also tried clicking exit then remove the usb
turn the machine on, insert usb in machine and when i get to the part select file, enter and nothing loaded ? when Bob sent me the sample he had done in a link it load to the usb just fine and the machine worked great so i'm of course doing something wrong or not completeing something ?? thanks again in advance!!

Look thru the files that are on your flash drive every time to confirm that your saved file is on there. When the screen came up that said the file was converted, it should have brought up a screen that say's save as ( your name for the file ) and below the name choice it will a box that says: .GEE files (GEE code file *.GEE) Leave that box as is.
When you do save the file you have to specify where to save it to, whether you save it on your pc somewhere of save it to your USB stick

Hi Guys, Not sure what has happened to my notifications......haven't received any in almost a month, I took for granted that there were no new post. Logged on today to find several new post. Jgtang, welcome to the forum, you've got two really helpful guys, Bob & Rick, helping you. They really have been a big help to me also. I've had my CNC for several years now. At first all I wanted to do was to take a photo and convert it to wood. I found out quick, that was easier said than done. I purchased a six month subscription from VictorClip3D to download some of the pictures like came with the machine. You are limited as to what you can download, but I got over 400 that I can use. That's when I really started enjoying the machine. Now I'm learning GIMP and am having some success but still have much to learn. To tell you the truth, GIMP is getting as enjoyable as the machine. Good luck, and work, work, work.

well came home for lunch and i guess the image and converting is not going to the usb ? the machine says system file 1 only.. i picture seems to load the image (greyscale) heart , i put in the full file name right above gee code and it does everything and even says g code saved and i click ok.. i even tried right clicking the image and sent the image to the usb and nothing... a box came up saying to go to files ? its right there downloaded on my greyscale files folder and says under the image ct-f005-ob.frame so that is what i put in as the file name, this is the same new usb 32G that worked with Bobs link he sent! would it be better if i plugged the computer directly into the cnc ? i plug the usb into the computer and it says file emty. back to work and hope to talk to you tonight.
