I know most people on this board have had little if any luck with carving two pass projects, my one attempt last year was on a bowl shape and it came out reasonably - just requiring a little sanding to make it perfect. So today I decided to try another simple shape, two "boxes" that would be the inside of a box that I'm carving for the wedding rings for my daughters wedding. Picture below. I had a nice piece of cherry that I cut in half, and wanted to make this design .42" deep in one side. Since it was cherry, I figured two passes of .21 would be best to minimize the strain on the drill motor. First pass went off without a hitch, and luckily I was near the machine when it reset for the second pass. I noticed that it had reset about 1/8" further down the Y axis than the first pass. Since it was basically carving air in the first passes, I was able to pause several times and reposition the wood along the y axis so I got it extremely close to the right position for carving the 2nd pass after about the 3rd reposition (did it all by eye ball). So then I let it finish the 2nd pass, and the end result was almost spot on except for a slight lip at the beginning of where the 2nd pass began. I was able to sand that out and got the end result that I wanted. I was really surprised by the y axis being off so much, is that what other people see?

Rick, of all axis the Y axis is the most inaccurate because of the gear drive. If you write down coordinates from setting up a project, let it run for a minute and stop it then go back to the same coordinates you will find that most of the time it will be off. The amount can vary but it is almost always just enough to cause problems with the design. For what you were doing on the ring box it would be possible to do some hand work and get the piece right, but doing relief scenes and sayings with their intricate designs it becomes and absolute pain to get those little anomalies out of the piece. Your 1/8" difference on the second pass does seem like a bit much however, maybe your table got in a bind a little on the re-position.

I hadn't used the machine for a month or more prior to carving the top heart design. I noticed at the starting end of the y axis, in manual mode, the table really seemed "sticky" but further down it didn't. I may have to reset the table, but I'd moved down lower on the y and the carving was fine so I went ahead and tried it. Running out of time for all the projects before the wedding so it will have to wait for a reset.

I am thinking about firing up the lathe and making some ring boxes. I'll make the round box and the lid on the lathe, the do a design with the machine on the lid. Lots of Spring weddings so that might be a good item.
