I'll admit it, I'm a little lazy (impatient) after the carving is done and anxious to go ahead and varnish the piece to completion. The problem for me is sanding, since these carvings leave so many little flat areas that need to be smoothed out to give you a good overall finish, I find myself rushing through it and usually iritated with the time consumed. I figure if I can find myself a small powered sander to help finish out the smaller details, I'm likely to become happier with the end results.
I have an orbital sander, great on flat surfaces and larger areas. I have a detail sander, one of those triangular ones that helps get in the medium size areas of a carving. I have an old Dremel contour sander (inherited, some day I'll run out of sand paper and be in trouble), this works great on smoothing out the edges of a "framed" carving but the only sandpaper is too rough to be of much good on flat surfaces. So with what I have on hand, I can accomplish about 90% of most projects perfectly fine. It's in projects like my current one ( 3 panel world map ) that I struggle - the mediteranian sea is tough to reach into with my fat fingers.
So I'm looking at micro sanders, and wondered if anyone has any experience with them. Most appear to require their own electrical box in addition to the sander, probably to control the voltage to the sander....and most reviewers tend to say that operating the sanders without this "option" will give you a short live expectancy. I have found one, the Micro Power Sander 81266, which appears to be exactly what I'm looking for, although I'd prefer an orbital motion to this recipricating one I think for light sanding it will do well. At $90 though, I figured I'd ask if anyone has a better solution.
