I haven't tried this yet, but an image could made sharper. or more interesting, by some wood burning to create highlights. By the same token, the lines could be carved out even more by hand before staining or sanding.

just read your post, (i have been reading most the old post) one year for Christmas I made several beautiful butcher block cutting boards and engraved them with only a wood burner, so your idea to incorporate the 2 would be great. by the way the folks that use the boards, turn them over to cut on

This is an old topic line, but I recently began selling some stuff for an estate on ebay and came across this plaque that was handcarved (pre-CNC days) and enhanced with a wood burner. I think that the results are pretty good in highlighting different depths and giving more visual enhancement to the final results. Attachments:

I think it's a classy look, stains look great, but the wood-burner gives it a depth shadow
