Today I uncovered my machine for the first time in years everything worked fine. I must admit I have not had the kind of trouble I have seen with other users machines. I did have a problem with multiple passes but I found it to be more the software Ipicture than the machine. Once I started using Vectric's vcarve and cut2d I opened up a whole new field of use for the machine. With cut2d I made some Harley signs for a few guys and cut them with about 4 passes each leaving the cut out tabs to remove the sign from the board. You can run .nc files or just re name them .gee file. s146.photobucket.com/user/gregs_photo/profile/

Greg, nice to hear from you, and that your machine is still working. Mine seems to be ok considering the amount of use I have gotten over time. I have had spindle motor failures ( I am on my 4th or 5th one) but all else seems to run fine.

Hey Bob I've seen on here that you had those issues do you think it may be from excessive side pressure? One of the reasons I came here was to see if anyone is doing the mod I have read about at cnczone, people are buying these units used and replacing the controller and spindle so it can be run from Mach3. s146.photobucket.com/user/gregs_photo/profile

I would be interested in reading up on that subject. I looked on that site but could not find anything about the mod. I had also considered replacing the gear rack on the Y axis with a lead screw linear drive, but I believe the stepper settings for that would have to be changed. Nothing I'm ready to do just yet but looking for options down the road. The spindle motor lateral pressure might be helping to contribute to the failures, I have replaced those bearings in the mount a few times but I believe the lack of power contributes as well. The variable frequency drive spindles start out at 1500 watts which is double the 800 for this spindle motor. The people at vectorclip have also done a mod for the 1013 using a router but those things won't hold up long due to the fact they are not designed to run for extended periods of time and are extremely noisy. You can only obtain the file with all pertinent info if you are a subscriber to their pattern site.

Greg, question.....does vcarve output code correctly for the 1013. Yes it does Bob I used that software much more than I ever used Ipicture plus I used cut2d plenty. With cut2d you can cut out stuff like wing spars or anything on a blueprint or just plain text. the more you use cut2d the more you find to do with it. With Vcarve you can play around with the diagonal settings in away that gives you almost a perfect picture in wood from a picture. I know the software is a little high for a home user but I got my monies worth, I have not upgraded though.
CORRECTION: www.vectric.com/products/photovcarve.html photovcarve not the $1500 vcarve software, I wish I had that one.

Greg, do you have any links to the mods people have done on the 1013 to run Mach 3 at cnc zone. I searched for them but have not been able to locate them.

No Bob just some saying they bought this machine to put a controller on it and run it from Mach3.
You really don't need to do that because I have run cut2d projects from Vectric and they cut just like any cnc machine, our machine will run NC code direct with out running it through Ipicture as long as you are using the correct post.

In fact Bob you can set up a 45 degree tool in any of vectrics programs and cut plain text line because true type fonts are actually vectors.

Here is an example and none of the surface was cut only the design and it took about 10 minutes instead of 10 hours: Attachments:

Greg, I downloaded the trial version of cut2d and am going to run the test file "Avalon" nameplate. There are 2 post processors listed : I-carver inch (2014) and I-carver inch, do you know which one works best? In the free file to test, one cannot change any of the parameters such as re defining the tool from an endmill to say a ballnose bit, so I am wanting to know if in the actual version I would be able to add one of the bits that I use, namely the 1/32" and 1/50" ball nose conical to the tool database.

Hey Bob Sorry I kind of forgot to come back here, yes you can set up any bit you want it lets you put the bits dimensions in. The post I use is the old one the one I uploaded here just make sure your machine is set to match your post. Your machine has a setting for inch or metric in the menu. The version I purchased was the one that included photVcarve and cut2d in 1 package but my version is from 2013 or so but it still works great on my windows 10 pc in fact I am thinking seriously about upgrading to the current version.

Greg, Thanks for the info. I have not had a chance to run the test file on the machine yet. It's been either crappy weather or time constraints that keep me from heating up the shop and doing some work out there. We have had around 6 inches of rain here in the last 10 days, a winter storm with snow and temps down to below zero and now it's 45 a raining again. The ground around here is mush.

Same thing here Bob, we had 17" in 11 hours my brothers restaurant flooded with 2 feet of water. That picture of the Christmas tree was done on my machine not one I downloaded, the only thing I do is to try and make the cut in one pass it will do fine with as many as four passes but I make sure my bed rails and gears have almost no slack. If you let the slack in the gears build up the machine will loose its position.
Not having a ball screw on the Y is the main hindrance on this machine but plenty of systems use a gear drive. I made a Harley sign for my son with a 1/8 bit and took 4 passes with it and it did fine.

Well it finally warmed up here temporarily today so I decided to run a cut 2d test file, the sign "Avalon". The code generated by cut 2d would not run on the machine at all, so I ran the code thru I-Picture to generate Gee Code and that was all over the place. The avalon test file should have a total dimension of 7.5 inches long X 3 Inches tall, but the machine wants to cut something on the order of 15 inches long. A question would be: in running the code file generated by cut 2d thru I-Picture do I need to specify the dimensions in the I-Picture or should it be getting those from the cut 2d file. I tried running the files in both inch and mm using to the correct PP for each and setting the machine to run first in inch then back to mm for the respective files, sill the same result.
