is the RO.8 a good bit to use, do the endmill bits carve flat ?

Where the normal bits are slanted so the carving always has a slant to the edge of it, the endmill bit is flat so it will carve square edges. I haven't used it because I'm puzzled with how it will work, for example on the plunge cut at the beginning of the piece. I had intended to try doing some inlays with it, but had lost the bit so never got around to it. I found the bit today, brand new and in the package, so maybe I'll get around to doing some test items. I was thinking that if I cut an inlay out using a black border on a white inlay, then inverse the drawing and carve out the receiving piece, I should have two matching parts.
I did try this once with a R.05 bit, and the inlay and carved out piece were a close match, but even though I used the same z setting on both the slanted edge of the inlay didn't let it go all the way into the hole. What I ended up doing worked well, just taking wood chisels and carving the hole to match the inlay, it was mostly just squaring off the edges and going a tiny bit deeper - less than 1/2 hour of work.

well i tried carving acrylic again! this time with an actual acrylic bit, set the depth @ 0.08 used the 1/32 bit machine # for the tool and held the bit about 1/16 above the project and it worked pretty damn good.. still want to get the 2015 or the shark but this 1013 is pretty darn good for just going back and forth! i will watch it and can't take my eyes off its so interesting! i've been learning vcarve and its awesome! a whole new world to say the least... and its just the trial version which is limited on the tools and you can't save the work, i talked to Steve @ iconic very nice guy and he was telling me when i purchase vcarve and have all the tools it will be unlimited. anyways thought i'd share

What do you mean by "actual acrylic bit"? I used the standard bits when I did acrylic and got good results as long as I made sure I had cast acrylic to carve.
I'm thinking the 2015 when my 1013 gives up the ghost, since I wouldn't have to learn new software to keep using it. I'd probably dabble with the vcarve, but I'm too lazy to learn something new.

what i mean is.... i was a dummy and used the 1/32 standard bit the first time! i tried it first and it seemed to be ok... so i set up the carve project shallow cut and started it with the 1/32 and went out to the garage for 45 min, walking back to the house i heard the machine on but no carving! got to the machine quickly and man that sucker was frozen up... the acrylic started to build up on the bit and then cooled down and locked up the machine, it kept trying to move but... it was sad! i thought the machine was done. set up another carve with wood and it was fine, i got lucky! then found the up cut bit on amazon for plastic.acrylic, plexiglass, etc. tried it and boom... nice carve! boy did i feel stupid, but the machine gos on and on.... amazing what happends with the right tools.

Haven't looked at the Shark HD4 or Piranha units in a while, so since you'd mentioned them I went for a look see. I think I now remember why I wasn't that interested. They do have two options that are interesting, the laser etching and the rotary carving capabilities.
1. The units are NOT out of the box ready to go. You need to purchase a compatible router model that will work with it. My Bosch router isn't on their list and it's only a year old. So I'd have to buy another one dedicated to just this machine. 2. The cost isn't that inexpensive for just a frame and the controller mechanisms. Having to add in the additional costs of router, laser carving, round carving components makes it pretty expensive for a hobbiest like me. 3. The 2015 is a out of the box option. That means my knowledge of how to set it up is limited, and I already know ipicture and only need to learn to play with the new software as I feel the need to. 4. The Shark, to use the round carving or laser, would require the capability to store the components somewhere everytime I used the CNC carving option. I have a small section of my garage as a workshop, so storing "extra" items isn't a good option.
With the 2015 Black Friday pricing of $4k and free shipping, I think this makes more sense to me for my needs. I would like the added capabilities the Shark advertises, just don't think I'm likely to make much use of them.

I hear yeah... and your right! you know i did not know that i had a rockler store 30 min away in rocklin so i visited the store today. the HD4 shark was there and was the 4 watt laser.. that laser really does some nice work i was shocked! the shark table on the none extended table was like 30x36 but carving size 24x24 didn't like that! i even told the very nice guys there i was getting the iconic 2015 and they both said its a really nice machine. i admit i really liked the idea of a laser for anything, but like Steve @ iconic said that your probably better off with a cnc carver and a laser engraver machine. so i'm going to end up with the 2015 and 1013 and the huge dog, also the full spectrum laser 20"x12" i think. the vcarve will run the 2 smaller cnc's and also run the 4x10 router master space saver huge thing i picked up for nothing. i'm really getting into this stuff and having fun learning. Steve also told me about photovcarve so i'm getting the photo vcarve in a package deal that Steve said is basically ipicture with a no limit carving size. so a year ago i didn't have one machine and now i'll have 3 maybe 4.. i'm @ the stage of my life where its time to have some fun, my garage is huge but were moving.. new one should be bigger so room shouldn't be a problem, need to down size in the car collecting front because i'l never get them all done. I love building homes, love to restore the classic mustangs but this cnc carving is really a new fun! i don't know how i end up with all this stuff but i do. we don't have alot of money but i fine these deals and i grab'em.. sorry for going on and on

Wish I had your garage/workshop....I'd have more machines too. Once I got away from just wall hangings with the 1013 into furnishings and specialty furniture type things I've found that I'm having a lot of fun. Each time I try a new project I really enjoy working it out, and using the 1013 to add some flair to the project. I'm not so enthusiastic about repeats, which is typically what happens with friends/relatives "Hey I want one too".
I've really just started working with better woods - cherry, walnut, curly maple - and doing a better job of sanding to get the glass like table top finishes. Woodworking is fun, if you have the time and room.

Nick, I'd talk to iconiccnc.com and ask for a copy. They are Canadian, but cover the USA also on the Intellicarve and General Machinery versions of the 1013 and 1015, and sell the newest model of this family of machines. If you are a current owner of a machine, I'd think they'd be able to supply you with a copy of the software for free.

yes it is, on custom speed. i'm going to start testing the tool change for borders/differant text etc.. amazing how fast it is watching it, then when i learn the tile part it can be alot bigger if i want. one thing with this machine is the clearer the lines the better, if the lines are not nice and dark when you convert bitmap to vector it does not pick everything up.. so i'm going to design more things with sharper lines. very fun though!
