Good question, it did a great job scratching my base one time when I set the z deeper than the wood without a sacrificial board under it (oops). The machine screamed like hell, but it got my attention quickly and minimized the damage it could of done. Personally I don't believe the spindle motor could handle aluminum and last long.

yeah same thing happen to me, i set the depth to deep and whamo... put a small hole in one of the raised alum ribs! caught it right way though.. and i agree with you on the spindle being pretty small for a carve like that. thanx

Motherboard, or the board you're carving? I'm taking for granted you mean motherboard.

Seems strange to me, and I'm not by any means an expert in this area, that something in the motherboard would be causing this. Maybe it's not receiving the signal correctly from the limit switches but I can't see what else would change within an electronic board to make this happen. But what do I know.

me too! i would think that if the M-board was going bad or is bad it would do it all the time! whats weard is it will do it about every 10-12 carves. all of the sudden the carve starts going almost off the table down word after starting out nice and straight.. but when i told him what is going on right away the M-board. so i'm seriously thinking on ordering the 2015 and the M-board on monday.. i like the 1013 and will probably keep useing it and the 2015 really looks super cool and fast, steve was telling me if it takes the 1013 12 hrs to do a carve, the 2015 will be 45 min! i'm messing with vcarve pro to but i really like ipicture.. thats more my speed!

jg, at one point in time I was having something similar happen, but only on aggressive carvings (deep cuts, high feed rate). The x axis seemed to lose its reference point and make a little jump every pass until I would notice it, or until it hit the x travel limit. Turned out that the coupling between the motor and ballscrew was not tight and under load it would slip a little bit each pass, more in one direction than in the opposite - resulting in an error that accumulated with each pass. I tightened up the coupling set screws and it was ok after that. Anyhow that is a mechanical cause you could check out, just in case. ...Andrew.

I know Bob also had a problem with his coupling, and ended up taking it apart....which he cautioned was an extremely tricky deal. Not sure it this problem with the carving is what made him do it or not.
