I've had my machine about a year and a half and haven't really used it much. I got the disc with some pictures/images with my machine but most of them just wasn't what I wanted to cut. Recently I took out a subscription with one of the download picture/images company. This is better but costly. I have recently started trying to learn GIMP and I ultimately hope to be able to take any .jpg photo and convert it to match the ones on the disc or download.
Bob, on some of the older post, I saw where you had stated that you had some videos. I was able to locate the one about frames using G'mic, which is wonderfully helpful, but I didn't locate the others. From what I saw in this video, I would really like to see the others also. If you could point me in the direction to find these it would help.
Any suggestions, pointers or steps that any of you can share would be greatly appreciated.

It is better to convert your image to a PNG image before you do any work to it, just save it as a PNG file. When working on JPG files, often little white lines appear around the edges of objects.

Some improvement, still trying to zero in on success. The "Store Bought" images are doing good, just problems with staining and finishes.
This is a tray using a VectorClip3D image. Turned out OK but still not happy with the finish.
This is a carving fresh off the CNC. Image is from Google Images and used GIMP to 3D it. It looks too flat and the tree trunks are not rounded. After looking at your video again, I'm thinking I'm still having problems with brightness-contrast and gaussian blur. Again, thanks for all your help

Love your tray, in the picture the finish looks fine to me. You must have a wedding in the family coming up (11/19/16), so congrats. I've started to migrate many of my pieces to a Spar Varnish, which is marine grade for outdoor uses. It costs more, but I think it gives a richer feel to the finished piece.
It looks to me on the tree picture that you are have a problem with the edges of the items, which causes them to be carved higher than the rest. This would negate, somewhat, the effect of your blur which is taking the pixels from light to dark. In Photoshop, there is a "refine edge" section which allows you to smooth out the differences along the edges of the pictured item...........I don't know GIMP, but Bob does and probably noticed the same thing.

Thanks Rick, I will try you Spar Varnish. After selling John Deere for twenty five years, I'm a believer that there are usually reasons for a higher price and in most cases you get what you pay for.

Fatpoppy, I'd love to see your finished carving if you could post a picture.
One other point I'd make, it's usually better to cut across the grain rather than with it. I noticed on your scene picture that you went with the grain. Going across grain allows the bit to cut into the wood smoother, and leaves you with less clean up afterwards. It's a shame that this is so, the grain pattern under the trees in your carving above adds a nice little touch to the piece. I turn a lot of my pictures sideways to allow it to carve against the grain, and it often ends up that by turning the picture I can carve a larger piece since the X axis is shorter than the Y on the machine.

Final three. Looks as if I'm about to have to replace the spindle motor on my 40-913. Has anyone located one for less that $250?
