my carving was 27% complete (standard oliver issued carving, the sunflower picture frame), all the sudden the spindle raised as if it was finished and stopped. the screen remained as if were still running, meaning no error. I told it to pause (of course it was already paused) then I pressed the continue, which it did for about and 1" then it did it again, so I shut it off. We did have a storm coming but it was 1/2 hour away. Can you restart a carving once it gets confused?

It sounds like you had a power interrupt, the machines will get confused by a split second power glitch. I usually do not try to carve anything when there is the any possibility of storms in the area just for that reason. As far as restarting the carve the only way to do so is to have the original start point co-ordinates. When you are setting up your carve, jogging the X, Y and Z to your start point whether it be in one corner or the center (I like to use the center start point) once you have the position set, and ...Before you hit the enter button to zero it out you can write down those co-ordinates so that if you have to restart the carve you can go back to the place where it began. The machine will be doing an "air" carve on what was already done, meaning carving nothing until it gets to the area where it left off.You could also, using the co-ordinates you wrote down add some depth to the Z setting so that it re-carves the entire piece, this would eliminate any chance of there being a line in your carving where it stopped and restarted. If you used the home position as the beginning in the corner that might work as well, though I have never tried it.
